Things to Make and Do

Vintage Sewing Basket

January15

Look what I found in my local thrift store: a pretty little sewing basket. I bought it together with 20 buttons, some thread, trims and a scarf for 2,50 Euro. How cool is that!?  Excuse the crappy pic, I took it with Photo Booth in my office the day I bought it so I could show it to Tony.

After a good sanding, I painted it a nice shade of greenish blue and reupholstered it with a matching Amy Butler print. Voila, a new pretty home for my sewing gadgets.

And this is how it looks on the inside, a lot of space for all the stuff I need. I keep it right next to my sewing table so I can change the foot or thread without getting up, or take it to the living room if I have to cut on the floor again. (I really have to get some kind of cutting table)

So do you have a sewing basket? How do you store the items you use often?

The cake is a lie

December22

Funny thing: when I was a kid my mum used to craft a lot, but mainly she did embroidery. I remember her sitting on the beach when we where in Italy on vacation, stitching while I probably complained that I don’t want to wear a t-shirt, and no mum the sun won’t hurt me. I always wondered how she could bring up the patience to stitch a whole blanket with flowers and leaves.

Well about 25 years later, I understand. It’s kind of relaxing, and busy hands… how does that saying go?

Anyway, I made this little cake for my boyfriend as a present for our 4th anniversary. I already framed it, and it now hangs on his kitchen wall. In case you are wondering why it says “the cake is a lie”: it’s from a computer game called Portal where you have to survive in test chambers while a crazy computer voice promises you cake and grief counseling if you survive - which is obviously a lie.

Yup, we’re geeks.

The art of buying or buying art on Etsy

December12

I really needed some new pictures for my wall but couldn’t find anything I liked. The first idea was to take a huge golden frame, put some pin board behind and cover it with some nice fabric. But since I couldn’t find a frame big and cheap enough I started looking for some prints on Etsy. After a week I found four that I liked and ordered them. Here they are:

Red Haired Twins by artsandghosts

Ten arms for You by theblackapple

Branch Hair by munieca

I really love all the prints and as soon as I’ll get my lazy ass to buy some new frames I can show you the finished wall so far. I’m still planing on buying some more but haven’t found the right ones yet. So how about you, have you every bought some art from Etsy? What kind of pictures do you have on your wall?
