Oh boy I haven’t posted “Make Something” in awhile so I think it’s time for some quilts don’t you think? We all know that there are fantastic quilt patterns over at Amy Butler and all the other designers, but how about these quilts and block techniques?
Disappearing 9 Patch - a classic, but I still have to make one.
Olive Rose Quilt - really bold and beautiful design.
Tea Pot Block - don’t quilt? I’m sure you’ll still find a use for this.
Honeycomb Smocking - one word: AMAZING.
Mod Quilt - in case you lived under a rock: Oh Fransson awesome quilt along.
String Block - go, use your scraps!
Circle Blocks - fancy some circles in your quilt? Here you go.
Circle Blocks II - and another technique in case you didn’t like the first one,
And in case you forgot: some tutorials I posted a while ago
Miter Quilt Corner - you can also miter your quilt not only your binding.
Wonky Log Cabin - Log Cabin + Wonky = a lot of fun!
Basting a quilt - interesting version for basting a quilt (video).
Ty & Hide the knot - what to do when the bobbin runs out (video).
Still not inspired? Check out these fabulous quilts on flickr:

Remember my Spring Quilt I started way back in Febuary? Well, I actually managed to finish all the blocks and sew them together! Please excuse the washed out pictures, it’s impossible to take a good shot in my apartment, the lighting is so off :(

The layout is inspired my Denyse Schmidts’s “What a bunch of Squares” quilt, I just didn’t use her design for the blocks but came up with my own and then just went improv crazy with the different prints. I used some brown linen for the sashing and cut each square slightly different like Denyse suggested. As much as I like the look and feel of the linen, it’s a bitch to work with because its fraying like nobodies business. The quilt is kind of busy and I did a bad job of mixing the different blocks, but so far I really do like the outcome.
Now I only have to come up with some kind of design for the back and then I’ll have to quilt this beast. I would love to do some free motion quilting but I think this ones too huge to try out my skills. With 165cm x 200 cm I’m lucky if I don’t mess up straight lines.

Some Heather Ross

Some Joel Dewberry

And lots of Amy Butler

I don’t know what’s wrong with my brain, but for some reason I’m not capable of calculating fabric. Working on the blocks yesterday, it hit me that I completely forgot the border and that I don’t need 25 but 30 blocks. That wouldn’t be a problem if I hadn’t bought the last frackin’ bolt of the brown linen!! Argh! So now I have to go back to the store and pray that they have a meter left somewhere and if not, I’ll either have to make the quilt smaller or come up with another idea for the border. These are the options: green cotton border (the solid from the blocks), green linen border (they have a light green) or natural linen. I still keep my fingers crossed that they have some of the brown left, until then I leave you with a crappy pic of a few blocks with sashing.

…at least in my crafting room, because outside it’s still pretty cold. I finally started my spring quilt, and so far I have 15 blocks done and only 10 more to go. I’m not entirely sure about the sashing though. First I thought white cotton, then green cotton and now I switched to linen because I think I’d like a bit more variation texturewise. So going through the beige, white and green linen in the store my eyes fell on a chocolate brown one, and there goes my spring concept. I guess I’m not the light and airy girl after all. Here is a sneak peak of the blocks without the sashing, I think I can show you some finished blocks on Monday.

I just finish the binding (note to self: find your thimble), now all it needs is a good washing. Let me tell you the story why I made another quilt and not the small projects (like a camera strap) that I had planned.
Three days ago Tony and I were slacking on his sofa, just like the last two and a half weeks of our holiday, when he realized that the mermaid quilt is going home with me and that we had to share a blanket again. Voila, I had my new mission: slacking in style. Of course it had to be a quilt that fits his apartment (read: not so bright and kitschy as the mermaid quilt), so the next morning I got up while he was still asleep and went for a Caramel Latte and fabric shopping. I choose the colors with his couch (cream and chocolate brown) and armchair (red) in mind.

I kept the design fairly simple, otherwise I would probably still sitting here sewing. This time I used a medium loft cotton batting and I guess that’s one reason why I suddenly enjoyed the actual quilting, the other being that I quilted it diagonally (thanks to BettyNinja). It was so much fun and so easy, even without a walking foot, that I’m already thinking about my next quilt. Call me crazy.
I went for a scrappy binding to make it a bit more interesting, and I really like how it turned out. My favorite side is definitely the brown one, the red just reminds me too much of Christmas. But who am I to judge? Tony likes the quilt and Tuna loves it, it’s impossible to take a picture without her on it. So this is the final project of my sewing holiday, tomorrow I’ll have to get back to work saving the internet or what ever it is that I’m supposed to do there, can’t really remember after 3 weeks off :)
Update: the finished size is 150 x 185 cm or 60 x 73 inch

Did I say I wanted to make a little more small sewing project till Sunday? Well maybe I should rethink my definition of small, because I made another quilt.

But in my defense, it’s a really simple quilt and I’ve already done the quilting. Now I just have to sew on the binding, but since I have a killer headache at the moment, this will probably be a task for tomorrow.
